Fasting, Feasting Summary

Summary Analysis The novel opens in the modern day with Uma, middle-aged and still unmarried, at home in India in the summer, taking orders from Mama and Papa, or MamaPapa, as she thinks of them.

Mama's recollections about sneaking the sweets betray the unequal treatment of girls and boys in her own family and the secret defiance of women against that inequality. There is a gender inequality in their marriage, which reflects on the standards of their society in general: After three failed marriage attempts, including two dowry scams and one old man who marries Uma and then abandons her, Mama and Papa give up on trying to marry Uma off.

All the other children run helter-skelter to find a suitable hiding place. Aruna, meanwhile, receives many marriage proposals, and she chooses Arvind, a wealthy man from Bombay.

Mama and Papa choose not to remember their past selves very much, because to do so may be challenging to their ideal of marriage and the family as the most important unit. Uma's use of the term MamaPapa to think of her parents shows that she imagines them to be an inseparable unit, without individual wishes.

Both girls are seen as burdens to be disposed of and you could say they were betrayed. It is strongly hinted that her in-laws killed her.

A birthday party for the youngest son had to be broken up at once, when they discovered that the old man was on the verge of death. After Arun is born, Mama and Papa demand that Uma leave school to care for her baby brother.

Patton takes on a second job, and Mrs. Patton becomes obsessed with sun tanning, further neglecting her daughter. The unusual thing about her is her response to this suffering. We are left with great sympathy for Uma and her simple kindness as she survives as best she can in a not altogether friendly world.
